Year-End Financial Cleanup for Wineries: Why “Good Enough” Is No Longer Enough
For wineries, year-end is not simply an accounting exercise. It is the point at which financial discipline either shows up or years of small compromises finally catch up. Too many wineries treat year-end close as a compliance task: get the books to the tax preparer, have them file the returns, move on. That mindset is increasingly risky, given that you are operating in a challenging market. Margins are under pressure, inventory is expensive to carry, cash flow is tight, and lenders and partners expect better visibility than ever before. A clean, accurate year-end close is no longer optional. It is the foundation for survival and strategic decision-making in today’s wine market. Start Where Most Problems Begin: The Balance Sheet If your balance sheet is not clean, nothing else matters. At year-end, every winery should have: Fully reconciled bank and credit card accounts A realistic assessment of accounts receivable (what will actually be collected) Accounts payable that reflect

Tank Safety and Pressure Management: Protecting Wine and Workers
Tanks are critical production tools that must be handled safely. Pressure management is essential, especially for sparkling wine and other carbonated beverages, but even still wines benefit from properly designed and maintained tanks. Container Logic’s stainless steel tanks combine durability, precision, and safety features to protect both wine and the people working with it. Why Pressure Ratings Matter Every tank has a pressure limit, measured in bars. Selecting the right rating is vital: Still Wine: Even low-pressure environments can experience minor pressure buildup during fermentation. Using appropriately rated tanks prevents leaks, deformation, and safety hazards. Sparkling Wine & Carbonated Beverages: Secondary fermentation generates significant internal pressure. Tanks must safely handle this pressure to avoid blowouts, maintain product quality, and protect staff. Container Logic offers tanks rated from 1 bar to 7 bar, allowing wineries to choose the perfect ve

Exploring the Art of Mist Propagation
Mist propagation represents an innovative solution during periods when traditional hardwood cuttings may be limited, and is the most effective method for cultivating new rare varieties or special clones. Our nursery primarily utilizes this propagation technique when we receive new varieties from Foundation Plant Services (FPS), enabling us to establish a new mother block or expand existing ones. This method is also essential for maintaining the proper certification of the vines provided by FPS. This technique guarantees that vineyard owners receive exceptional genetic consistency with each vine produced, as every new vine is propagated from the same mother plant. With a single cutting, we can multiply the original vine to a quantity large enough to plant an entire vineyard. The Process Upon receiving the certified cutting from FPS, the cutting is first dipped in a growth hormone, and the edges of the leaves are trimmed to promote root development. This small cutting is then planted in

Lord of the Corks: A New Era in Sparkling Wine Analysis
Strike a New Path The SFD Filling Device, when used with high-precision measuring instruments such as CarboQC or CboxQC by Anton Paar, allows for the quick and reliable determination of dissolved COâ‚‚, dissolved oxygen, and other gases in sparkling wine and wine. Additionally, it calculates the package pressure based on total dissolved gases, providing a comprehensive analysis of the sample. Simple and Straightforward Designed for ease of use, the SFD Filling Device pierces the cork of a sparkling wine bottle using a manually operated threaded tube. Once the cork is fully penetrated, the sample tube is lowered into the bottle, and the sample is transferred via pressurized air or nitrogen—without exposing the liquid to the atmosphere. A tight seal between the piercing head and the bottle’s cork ensures that no COâ‚‚ escapes during the process, preserving the sample’s integrity for precise measurement. The device can accommodate various bottle sizes, from small formats

Construction Begins at the Foley Family Community Pavilion
The Foley Family Community Pavilion, the future home of the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market, is being built on the site of a former fruit packing warehouse in downtown Healdsburg, originally constructed in 1921.  As the project kicks off, the building is being stripped down to it’s historic metal structure. Every single rivet in the trusses needs to be replaced with high strength bolts. Can you guess how many? Find the answer in the last image.

How Does Your Wine Represent It's Terroir? Harvest Challenge Wine Competition
Understanding Terroir How is your wine represented? Entry Deadline is Friday, 10/25 2024 Harvest Challenge  A win in the Harvest Challenge as the BEST WINE in your AVA can put your wine into a ï»¿whole new sales category. Terroir is a French term that refers to the environmental factors that impact wine production, and it can affect many aspects of wine, including:  Flavor profile: The soil type, climate, and topography of a region all contribute to the flavor profile of the wine. For example, sandy soil tends to produce drier wines, while clay-based soils produce bolder wines.  Texture and mouthfeel: The soil type and topography of a region can impact the texture and mouthfeel of the wine. For example, chalky soils can give wine a mineral flavor and a chalky texture.  Balance and acidity: The climate, particularly the amount of sunshine, temperature variations, and rainfall patterns, can impact the balance of sugars and acids in the grapes.  Wine
